Dense Packed Cellulose

October 29, 2012

Now this is green insulation!

Cellulose is pretty awesome insulation. When you blow it in tightly, it's about as good at insulating and air sealing as open-celled foam, but way less expensive, largely recycled, non-petroleum, and a lot less flammable.

Yeah, it's a little messy. Yeah, we're still finding bits of it coming out of every crack, duct and windowsill in the house. And we don't even want to know how many boxes of staples they went through to get all that netting up there. But the only reason that really makes it the wrong choice is water (like the basement, or the outsides of our walls.) So as you can see by the piles and piles in the truck (and this is just one of the days they came by) we used as much as we could here.

The last picture shows a wall that was half open for repair to the plaster, and half saved. Where the plaster stayed, they drilled holes every bay. With insulation in a lot of the ceilings too, for sound, this house is starting to sound and feel a lot more cozy.
